Bug Description
Binary package hint: erlang
The erlang-base package includes the erlang compiler as well as the erlang runtime.
In the interests of providing a small runtime for deploying applications, it would be nice to split the compiler out into a separate package.
On top of the space savings from bug 385093, it looks like this would cut about 0.45 MB from the requirements to deploy e.g. CouchDB.

I don't think it is worth pursuing this for Karmic. The CouchDB startup script runs "erl -eval ...", which requires the compiler to evaluate, so it wouldn't make any savings on the Desktop CD.
