Bug Description

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

This is crazy. When I open http://ubuntuguide.org with Epiphany (epiphany-browser 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu1), the desktop crashes and I am brought back to the login screen. This occurs with the latest Hardy Heron packages.

This doesn't occur in Firefox.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

This sounds like an interaction between your video driver and epiphany. That page is quite large, so to be specific, maybe an allocation of memory is failing.

It would be helpful if you ran epiphany in the terminal like so:

$ epiphany-browser > ~/Desktop/epiphdbg 2>&1

This will help us track down the problem. Expect the same crash, but when you login again you should have a file on your desktop called epiphdbg. Please attach this.

Could you provide details on what video driver you are using?

I installed the same version and did not experience a crash.

Can you please check out the instructions at the link below and try to provide debugging information? A crash is nearly impossible to fix unless the developers have some information on what caused it.

I ran this command and the only thing in the file is:

** (epiphany-browser:6918): DEBUG: LoginManager tapped

I am using the latest nVidia driver from Envy (1:169.12
+2.6.24.500-500.16~envy).

I don't think so. Epiphany is not the only thing crashing. It causes the entire Xserver to crash.

I can not reproduce this on Hardy amd64 2.6.24-15-generic. NVIDIA 169.12+2.6.24.12-15.33 from the repositories.

Can you guys post your dmesg when this occurs?

For some reason I was not able to obtain a backtrace. Every time I attempted to attach gdb to Xorg it froze. I finally resorted to installing the Nvidia Beta driver 173.08 and I was not able to reproduce this crash. So I don't think this bug is in Epiphany.

Actually I was able to get a backtrace from a core file.

For me, this problem occurs in firefox and epiphany. I'm running the amd64 distribution on my intel core2duo. I installed epiphany after firefox did this reliably 8 times in a row. After I figured out that going to ubuntu guide was causing the problem in firefox, I installed epiphany and can still reliably reproduce the crash. I have an Nvidia 8800GTS, since that seems to be the unifying theme, and I'm running with the drivers that were automatically chosen for me when I accepted the restricted drivers dialog.
