Shouldn't it appear BEFORE rebooting? Other programs do add an item to the main menu instantly, while Epiphany apparently doesn't. This means that users who are not comfortable using either Alt+F2 or a console will not be able to start the application they've just installed using Add/Remove Programs.

I think this bug should be reopened, and can confirm it on an up-to-date (10-jun-2008) installation of Hardy.

Reopening. I just experienced this issue myself. The icon was not in the menu, but the .desktop file(s) existed, and an option was selected in System -> Preferences -> Main Menu. I unselected and reselected the option, and it immediately appeared in the Internet menu where it was meant to be in the first place. Sebastien Bacher mentioned in bug #237033 that this was not an epiphany-browser issue, but a known race condition. I have only seen this problem with epiphany. Even though this issue is minor and effectively resolves itself, it is still an issue, and therefore should remain open until it is fixed.

Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

the issue is not an epiphany-browser one but a race in the menus code, since the .desktop and the binary are in different packages the .desktop might be unpacked before having the binary available which will make the menu item not being listed since the binary it uses is not available and the menus code will not do an another update until the next event triggering a refresh or a session restart, anyway that's a known issue in the code and not due to the software shipping the entry

So it's possible to fix it if the .desktop is included with the binary package?

Menu updates should not require a logout/login - and in my opinion the user should be aware of it to avoid the confusion. :)

The solutions (the way I see it) are:
a) Create a notification through notification-daemon (just like firefox does specifying it requires a restart)
b) Placing .desktop in the binary package with a side-note in README.Debian file

it happens that I installed epiphany and there is no icon for it in menu/applications/internet even though I have checked its existence after editing the menu. It's there and checked, and still no luck to see it in the menu.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (development).

I too had the same problem in intrepid. Thanks to persia in ubuntu-motu channel, i was able to make it appear.

I had two entries for epiphany in menu editor one was checked and other not.

epiphany browser - Checked
epiphany browser(Gecko) - Not Checked

I checked the Gecko also and two entries appeared in Applications->Internet. I again invoked menu editor and unchecked Gecko. After that only one entry remained in the Applications->Internet and is working fine.

Following is dpkg log if anyone finds it useful:

Is there a bug somewhere about the menu race condition? It would be good to have it as a reference.
