I decided to run valgrind after reading an article about it. I don't really know what I'm doing, but I ran the following command (copied and pasted from the website):

G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=/tmp/valgrind.log /usr/bin/eog ~/SpiderOak/CELTA/Lesson\ Plans/2012-02-22/media/images.gif

Interestingly, eog *doesn't* crash when invoked this way. I'm attaching valgrind's log file.
