Bug Description

When selecting a jpg image and launching image viewer for a fullscreen view, the image displays for a short while (a matter of seconds) and then ubuntu crashes: the screen displays a rapidly scrolling series of command lines and responses until the PC is forcibly (manually) closed down.

(the equivalent Windows app has no problem with the image)

Do only some images cause this? Do you have an example you can upload? Thanks!

The problem would appear to be size related. The original problem applies to a selection of photos all sized 4000 x 3000 px (filesize 5M - typical example attached). I used GIMP to scale the size.
-- 3000 px wide (2.6M) caused no problem and the app behaved as expected,
-- 3500px wide (3.3M) caused the app to freeze once (and I was able to kill the app only) and it loaded OK another time
-- 3750 px wide (3.6M) froze the whole PC and required a manual shutdown

It does not appear to be camera related: I look a new photo this morning on a lower setting (3264 px wide filesize 3M) and the app behaved as expected.

Today's manifestions have been different from the last few days:
-- 4 times it logged me out (so a simple login was all that was required)
-- once it restarted the PC
-- 4 times it froze the PC (last screen was frozen, no ability to do anything, no pointer movement)
-- twice it gave a me a static command line screen (not the rolling ones I got yesterday and previous days)
I cannot find any correlation between the apps I had open prior to launching image viewer (if any) and the reaction when I open a large image.
Thanks for your support!

I can confirm this. It is related to images of a certain size and/or resolution, though I didn't narrow down it to specific numbers yet.

Like the original poster, I get logged out or I end up on a black screen with some debug output from the kernel (I guess).

I assumed it's due to my ancient hardware: I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (Gallium 0.4) with a Radeon 9600 (256 MB).

Sorry, submitted too early:

This problem is *not* eog related, as far as I can tell. It also happens when viewing pictures on deviantart.com using Firefox.

Actually it is exactly what I get in Ubuntu 13.04, too. Large images crash eog.

One recent crash looked like this in terminal (first line is always there):

eog DSC07456.JPG
eog: /build/buildd/cairo-1.12.14/src/cairo-mempool.c:160: get_buddy: Assertion `offset + (1 << bits) <= pool->num_blocks' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

I face the same problem in ubuntu 12.04.
In the Image Viewer, whenever I click on an image, the system crashes and asks whether to run in low key graphics. I don't get to choose my response except clicking on either 'enter' or 'esc' to which the system responds by displaying a set of commands and being stuck there untill I manually shut down and restart....

I'm hitting this in Ubuntu 14.04.
The whole OS (not just the image viewer) consistently crashes (freeze) when trying to open one particularly large (24K*20K resolution) jpg image. The file is 16MB in size.
Let me know if any resources are needed to debug this.
I'm able to reproduce the problem consistently with this image file.
I don't see anything particularly alarming in /var/log/syslog at the time of crash.

I also get this error in Ubuntu 14.04 when I try to view some jpg images from http://www.vectorworldmap.com/ . The X crashes and start to not respond when I try to open this with firefox or image viewer.

I'm seeing something like this now. I have at least one JPG (10MP) that will crash the desktop session when I try to open it with either the standard photo viewer or Shotwell. This is on 18.04.01.

If you have an issue on 18.04 please open a new bug with the image attached if possible. Those issues are usually video driver bugs though
