the emscripten version provided with the official package doesn't compile to HTML

I tried compiling a simple hello world example, with:

emcc hello.c -o hello.html

All I get is:

/usr/bin/lli: error creating EE: No available targets are compatible with this triple, see -version for the available targets.
FAIL: Running the generated program failed!

What is wrong?
