Rodrigo Virote Kassick (kassick) wrote :

This seems to be an intermittent bug for men. Soon after login, the message list appears to work ok -- click on a contact, it opens a chat window, adds an entry to the notification tray.

Most of the times, the problem occurs after I open the first chat window -- i.e. I start chatting with contact A; soon I need to send a message to contact B, who is online. Clicking on the contact name or drag-and-dropping the contact into an opened chat window does not work.

If contacts A and B started conversations with me and I only answered them in the notification tray, I usually can open the chat window via the notification "bubble" for *only one of the contacts*. Works the first time only, then I can not open any other chat window.

Starting a chat via gnome-contacts works correctly.

Most of the times, the only solution to have the chat windows back is to close all chat windows and the contact list, disconect from all IM accounts, kill mission-control and then start all over again.

Curiously, after I opened the debug window to generate the log, I figured I had regained the ability to open chat windows. Don't think it's related, but 've never seen empathy get back to working correctly...

I'm seeing this in Empathy too; if I try to open a new chat window from the Empathy Contact List, nothing happens.

But if I start a new conversation from the Gnome Contacts list, then open a new chat with that user in Empathy, it works.

What gives?

This is happening to me as well. As described by Rodrigo, after a reboot it may work ok for a while. If I click "Quit" from the chat menu and launch it again sometimes it works for a while as well.

I've tried launching Empathy from a console to see if it logs anything but nothing shows.

To bil21al:
Exact steps? Seemed pretty exact above but simply log in to Gnome 3 Shell in Ubuntu Natty, launch Empathy. Wait a while. Maybe an hour, maybe a day. Try to chat with someone, no chat window opens. If they send you a chat it pops up in the Gnome Shell widget thingy at the bottom, but right clicking their name and picking "open" from the tray does nothing. Double click their name in the Empathy user list does nothing.

I strongly suspect this is a unity bug and not an empathy one, I've had the same thing, and then the window has appeared after I for example switch workspace.

Windows also tend to disapear like this when dragging between workspaces.
