Ubuntu has the capability to keep me online while Empathy is closed, but still forces me to open Empathy

Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

If I open Empathy, Empathy logs me in, I can close down Empathy, and then I will _stay online_ - people can talk to me and see my status.
Yet in spite of this feature, Ubuntu forces me to Open Empathy to get online. To get online, I open Empathy, close it down again. Wouldn't users find it more straightforward to have the option of being signed in automatically?

In Ubuntu 11.04 (expectedly) you wont need to open empathy. to sign in, you will be able to login by changing your status in the MeMenu.

affects: software-center (Ubuntu) → empathy (Ubuntu)

Will it also be able to remember ones status between sessions? E.g., if I was online when I shut down my computer, will it automatically bring me back online when I turn it on again?

If so, then the only thing needed to free me from having to open the Pidgin window for doing regular IM-tasks is to list my online buddies in the i Messaging Menu.
