Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Trying out Empathy in Lucid. In Preferences/Notifications, I have the following enabled:

Enable Bubble Notifications
Disable Notifications when away or busy
Enable Notification when the chat is not focused

I then had someone send me a message in four different cases:

1: When no chat is open, but contact list is focused: The only indication I had that a message was incoming was that the icon next to the contact name flashed
2: When chat is open but not focused: I saw the new message appear in the chat, however, the chat window did not jump forward, nor did any other indication appear that a new message had arrived.
3: When no chat was open and contact list was minimized: No indication at all that a message had arrived
4: When no chat was open and the contact list was closed: contact said she did not have permission to chat with me.

All attempts were made via Facebook chat in this case.

I was under the impression that Bubble notification would pop up a bubble on screen with the contact name and message, yet no bubbles popped up at all.

I also thought that the messaging icon in Indicator Applet would flash or otherwise alert me to an incomming message, yet Indicator Applet also did nothing.

Addendum... I DID finally get a bubble popup, about 10 - 15 minutes AFTER the message had arrived and appeared in the chat window.

I miss a lot of new messages with Empathy and Lucid. Indeed, the small green indicator applet without notifications is not enough for my distracted mind :)

@Jess : in my case, they don't appear at all (with a Jabber / Gmail account)

Was fixed with last update/reboot :)

I get this too on Lucid. I tried to give Empathy a week because it's the default, but it's unusable without notifications.

Someone could be trying to talk to me for hours, and I'd have little way of knowing. I don't find out until I manually bring the contact list to the foreground and notice the blinking icon next to their name. Though once the chat window is open, I start getting brief notification bubbles with each incoming message. Even then it's still easy to miss things.

Sorry, this isn't an upstream issue. It appears to be fixed, but David, could you please provide us with the version of empathy you are using as well as the version of indicator-applet you are using?
