AIM suddenly won't connect using Empathy - "Network error"

Bug Description

Sometime last week, Empathy stopped being able to connect to my AIM account. I checked to see if Pidgin had the same problem too, and it did. I was able to fix the problem in Pidgin by unchecking "Use SSL" under Accounts>AIM>Edit Account>Advanced

There is no similar setting in Empathy that I can find that fixes this. Any ideas about why this suddenly occurred for both accounts at the same time, and how to fix it?

Note:
Using Empathy 2.28.1.1 and Pidgin 2.6.5 on Karmic 64-bit.
