Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

when empathy is minimized to the tray it does not remember it's window state. When brought up from the tray the window is always positioned in the top left corner of the screen.

I would like to add this information:
When I start empathy 2.24.1, it works fine. But if for some reason the connection breaks, it stops memorizing position of its window. To reproduce this bug, do the following:

1. start empathy, login to ICQ
2. go to web and start ICQ2GO, this action will close the first session. As a result, empathy will forget the position of its window and will open in the top left corner.

If empathy is open and I minimize it and restore it, the window appears on the same desktop even if I'm on an other desk. Using compiz

I am using the current version in karmic 2.27.3 and the bug is still present for me in the following form:

I always keep my contact list in the upper right corner. When I minimize empathy to the tray and restore it the contact list is still at the right site but it moved a bit down. When I do this a few times the contact list is in the lower right corner.

This isn't really a severe bug but it's still very annoying. In the case that empathy will be the default for karmic I am adding this to the hundred paper cuts.

I get the same symptoms as Tom Fuchs. It is irritating because the window is not where you expect it to be, but it isn't even consistent about this: it does not go to the same unwanted location each time but moves across the screen in a way that is not easily predictable.

Hello,
I also noticed the same bug.
I had the empathy default jaunty version and it happened, now I have the ppa repository version for jaunty, and it still happens.
I tried with and without compiz and I saw that the window hasn't got the same behaviour in each case :
- with compiz : it moves down and right each time you minimize and maximize it. the down moving distance seems to be the height of the window's top border.
- with metacity, it's a little bit odder :
   * sometimes it remembers its position, I haven't noticed when.
   * when there are no other windows on the top-left part of the desktop : empathy's window seems to always appear in the same position : its top border is sticked to the bottom border of the desktop icons (the first row). And its left border is near the left side of the desktop. I added an attachment. to show this position.
   * if another window is opened and occupies (even partially) the place where empathy should be, empathy moves to different positions depending on the space left around (e.g. : if there is enough space on the left of the other window, empathy will maximize top-left, even if there is enough space elsewhere). As there are too many different behaviours, I won't enumerate them all.

I hope that I explained my observation clearly enough, and that it will help you to solve this bug.

This also happens to me in Ubuntu 12.04. Empathy doesn't remember his position and always restarts on top left corner with loosing it's last position and window size.
