empathy shows No online contacts when online

Its in Available mode and there are definitely contacts online, yet the empty list with the No online contacts text is shown. This happens often, but not 100% of the time. This issue did not exist in 12.10. I also see occasional crashes from telepathy-auth and telepathy-gabble (the information has been submitted via apport for those).
