Bug Description

Binary package hint: emerald

Shadows on the bottom and the top of a window don't appear if I set 'Shadow radius' property more than ~14.

I attached screenshot.

I get similar results with all themes using Truglass 0.5 engine.

Ubuntu 8.10 x86-64
Emerald: 0.7.2-0ubuntu2
Compiz: 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1

Hi,

This looks like it might be related to bug 238683 (noticeable step in shadow). One of the comments states that increasing the shadow radius sufficiently causes the top and bottom shadows to disappear. Can you confirm that with shadow radius < 14, you see a step-change in the shadow?

Thanks

Hello,

No, I don't confirm that. I hadn't seen anything like that, except disappearing of top and bottom shadows. Shadows don't reappear even if 'enhanced zoom' in compiz is used. It seems that size of window also has impact here, because for larger windows, sufficient shadow radius is smaller.

I confirm this bug in Intrepid. I'm using a nVidia 6600 card with 177 proprietary drivers from official repositories.
Shadows are OK for windows with width lower than 940 pixels with 15 Shadow Radius, 800 pixels with 18 Shadow Radius and less pixels as you rise the Shadow Radius. If you use the Reflections plugin from Compiz and Radius high enough to be seen, the issue is way more visible as you resize the window.
The theme I'm using is Azurite Studio, but is reproducible in every emerald theme with shadows.

Another confirmation from me, 177 also, nVidia 7600 GS. Lowered Shadow Radius to 4, can get a window up to 1732 width, but then a weird block appears at the corner of the shadow - real ugly. I am using the truglass engine (0.5), Shadows Opacity = 0.46, X and Y offsets = 5.

Confirmed here. Shadow missing on top and bottom when the windows size is big. Same with many tested Emerald themes. Using NVIDIA.

Note: Seems to depend on Window width, not height.

Another Confirmation. The sufficient shadow radius gets smaller as the window width gets larger.

Emerald: 0.7.2-0ubuntu2

Same thing here. I use a Zootreves theme. As with other posters above, as the shadow radius varies inversely with the window width sufficient to break the shadows.

I should mention I'm using the Intel driver, Intrepid, and Emerald 0.7.2-0ubuntu2.

Is there any other information you need to confirm this bug?

Thanks.

Can anyone recreate this on the current Jaunty beta? I can't recreate this at all. Could those experiencing this please post their Compiz configuration. To do this, please run:

gconftool-2 -R /apps/compiz > compiz.gconf

...then attach the resulting file here.

Thanks

Yes, the bug still alive in Jaunty, when using emerald themes with shadows.

Same problem append when the window have more that 1290 pixels wide.
In my case the missing upper and lower shadow have 1260 pixels wide.

Same here on Ubuntu Jaunty and NVIDIA GT9800 card with latest NVIDIA drivers. Emerald package version is 0.7.2 but I always noticed this behaviour :(

As already stated, the shadow brokenness depends on window size. I'm using a resolution of 1440x900 and have to leave the shadow radius in 8.3 or less; otherwise, Emerald break it when window size is close to the horizontal screen size. By the way, this is a very old bug (even Emerald from Beryl has it).

It is clear to everyone that the bug depends on windows width / shadow radius. But personally I wouldn't rate this bug as a low priority bug, since it is THAT much time it exists.

Verified bug still present in 9.10. If only Emerald/Compiz themes were the default, someone would probably have finally looked at this bug. ^^
