Bug Description

Since Emacs22 and for all of Emacs23 I'm used to do the following sometimes to copy one part of a file to another:

- move the cursor to the starting position and press ctrl-space to set point
- scroll down with the scroll bar
- click on the end position
- m-x copy-regTAB OR menu edit -> copy
- then paste into the new file / browser whatever

With the Ubuntu Emacs24 the behavior changes: as soon as I click on the end position it forgets about point and I can't copy anything. The new behavior seems to be a mock up of athena ws / windows / gtk / openstep text components: but selecting with a mouse drag doesn't really work either in Emacs because it just forgets about the selection and in each and any case it's much less exact than the previous method of Emacs 22/23. Even if the behavior was an user customization option the default behavior is just broken by all means.

Please revert back or provide alternatives until my standalone VIper implementation with Guile/GOOPS Scheme is up to the task.
