emacs23 disappears after being moved to a different workspace

I launched emacs23 from The Launcher. The window appears in my current workspace.
I right-clicked in emacs' titlebar and sent it to workspace #2.
I then used CTRL-ALT-rightarrow to switch to workspace #2. Emacs is not there.
I visited every (all 6) workspaces, and emacs does not show up on any of the workspaces!
I ran "ps guax | grep emacs", and emacs is still running.
The Launch button for Emacs is no longer showing the little triangle to the left of the emacs launcher icon. If the triangle were there, I would be able to click on it and move to the workspace containing the already-running emacs. If I click on this button, I get a new instance of emacs that complains that emacs is already running.

If I use ALT-TAB, I can see the running processes, but emacs does not always show up in the Switcher.
The emacs icon shows up on only some workspaces in the Switcher. If I select emacs, the display switches to some other workspace, but the emacs window does not show up.

P.S. I set the number of Workspaces by using CompizConfig Settings Manager->Desktop Size, and setting Horizontal Virtual Size from 2 to 3, and set the number of Desktops to 2.
Oddly, that tab has settings for "Horizontal Virtual Size", "Vertical Virtual Size" and "Number of Desktops". If I set # of Desktops back to 1, then Emacs shows up again!

This begs the question of what the relation ship is between Workspaces and Desktops. Only CompizConfig uses the term "Desktop". Unity uses "Workspace". When I sent emacs to another Workspace, it appears to have gone to a parallel universe called a Desktop instead of going to another Workspace in the current Desktop.
