Missing scrollbar thumb in emacsclient frame

Bug Description

I use emacsclient for most of my editing. Emacsclient is invoked with "emacsclient.emacs23 -a "" -c filename", which first starts the emacs server if one is not already running, and then creates a new frame with the buffer containing contents of the "filename".

I expected to always see the scrollbar thumb in the emacsclient frame. However the actual behavior is as described below.

For the very first time, when the emacs server is started (emacs --daemon) by emacsclient, the scrollbar thumb appears normal in the emacsclient window frame. If I close this frame with "C-C #" and open new one with the same command ("emacsclient.emacs23 -a "" -c filename"), the scrollbar does not show the thumb. Scrolling does work though. If I kill emacsclient and emacs and redo the process, I see the exact same behavior.

Same behavior is observed if I manually start the emacs server by invoking "emacs --daemon" from bash.

In my .emacs I do not have any specific configuration either for scrollbars or for windows/frames. I am not sure what would cause this. Any input is appreciated! Thanks.

Here is an update. Not only is the scrollbar thumb missing, but when I press the menu, say "File" or "Edit", the pop-up menu is all garbled. I can see the text, but do not see the selected item. Also, there is a big white garbled border around the pop-up menu. I was not able to get a screen-capture of the window and so have attached a photo showing the problem.

One more thing...in the original bug report I mentioned that I was closing the emacsclient frame with (C-C #). However, the correct key sequence I used is (C-x #). Sorry for the typo.
