Some font processing broken in emacs21 21.4a-1ubuntu1_i386

I'm running Ubuntu, but I have tried the 21.4a-3 package which is
currently in unstable at time of writing and find the same problem.

I use a X11 font string of:

 "-bitstream-bitstream vera sans mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-125-m-0-*-*"

(with the ttf-bitstream-vera package installed, of course)

This works fine with Emacs 21.3, but fails with 21.4. It gives small
boxes for each letter as if it cannot render the font.

I should note that this bug does not occur when I use the back-ported emacs-snapshot package from Debian Unstable.
(I backported it by hand)

I experience severe problems with font display in EMACS (Bug #45823), and I wonder if this could be an EMACS bug, since xfontsel displays the font(s) in question correct (see the attached xfontsel screenshot here and the screenshots attached to Bug #45823). Or could this problem be connected with Bug #39560?

EMACS version: 21.4a-3ubuntu2(dapper)
