init script doesn't show startup errors

Bug Description

The init script will spuriously report [OK] on a failed start and does not log the errors.

Ubuntu: 14.04

Elasticsearch: 1.3.9

What I expected: the script to report the error.

What did happen: the script reported success.

With ES 2.2.1 the script reports [fail] but the startup error is not logged in the log file

Seems to have the same root cause as bug 1535954
