Thanks for your report.
Feisty is in version freeze. Please follow the UVF-exception-process if you want to request a new ekiga version in feisty. (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess)

It's part of GNOME, so it does not need a UVF exception request.

But ekiga is part of the gnome-desktop and there is no other real sip/voice/video alternative for the gnome desktop.

It is only 10 days left to the final!

Hi,

In the meantime, you can use 2.0.9 on Feisty (x86):

Hi,

Sure, the best is ubuntu providing updated package for one of his core element. For me, Ubuntu still a mystery...

We also provide package (2.0.9) for Feisty AMD64:

greenhunter, the reason why ekiga is not updated is that the desktop team is way overworked at the moment. The team is small and you can have a look on https://bugs.launchpad.net/~desktop-bugs/+packagebugs which is list of packages maintained and on the 3000 bugs where the team is subscribed. What would help is somebody using ekiga giving a hand (maybe whoever is doing the work already out of Ubuntu?), you are welcome to mail the ubuntu-desktop or join #ubuntu-desktop on IRC if you are interested to work on it

Why don't you ask the nice people of wiki.ekiga.org to do so. Can't they compile and pack the missing debs for ubuntu? Why must every task done 50 times or more in the linux world?

OT: about me and ubuntu:

@Sebastian: You can call me an advanced user. Working with computers for 20 years. What I can do is installing OS, using application and advice friends and family how to use ubuntu and give them clues and simple workarounds. When I find a bug or see that there is something missing: ex. tb-adressbook support missing in OO, nautilus-sendto absolutly not working and of course ekiga out of date, I file a bug report. From my point of view those little bugs are more important.

Those are bugs an average users comes in contact with. They ask me, why it doesn't work. What are 100's or more hourse of your manpower worth, if not a simple desktop application like nautilus-sendto work at all.

Don't get me wrong, I am standing 100% behind ubuntu. No other OS, nothing else. Otherwise I wouldn't write this text.

Thank you and all other experts.

I've relayed you call inside the tools the ekiga team has (IRC, mailling-list). In fact I did it even before. But no one there can do that. That means our packages will have no support from Ubuntu (that's perfectly normal) and won't have good support from the ekiga team too. This is just a bad situation because we all need the right man in the right place but no one have him.

You must be aware problems with our packages SHOULD NOT be reported to Ubuntu. You can try us, but there is no guarantee we would help: we will try our best.

We did released packages because it would be a non-sens to work with 2.0.9 and having no people using it in Ubuntu or Debian (as the situation is the same in Debian) but 2.0.3 which is more than 1 years old now. We need people to use our software, the most up-to-date possibly, but sadly we can't provide the necessary support for the packaging part.

That also means as soon as Ubuntu will release its own packages, we will promote its packages, of course.

Regards,
Yannick

I would be keen to maintain ekiga in gnome. I worked on ekiga for a SOC project.

I have just started doing some misc bug fixes in ubuntu, but overall I am quite new.

What steps can I take to improving ekiga in ubuntu? How could I eventually become a maintainer?

Thanks siti. Let's discuss that on <email address hidden> - it'd be great to have an active ubuntu-voip team taking care of that. I'm happy to sponsor uploads to the archive. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess for the general process.
