I never saw empathy running. It crashed every time I tried to start it. I had to install pidgin again.

I can confirm this problem, though with a different error message:

segfault at ce ip 00227293 sp bfa86a10 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.2200.2[204000+3c000]

Please let me know if you need more info and I'll do what I can to provide it (karmic 9.10 /x86 on amd architecture, all current patches applied).
