Bug Description

Gedit is no longer listed in the "Open with Other Application" list. It used to be listed as "Text Editor" and careful checking of the list hasn't found it under any other name.

Not sure if this is a gedit or nautilus bug, or what else.

"gnome-menu-spec-test | grep gedit" returns no matches

gedit version 2.13.93-0ubuntu1
nautilus version 2.13.92-0ubuntu4

Thanks for the report.

I am unable to confirm this issue, with latest Dapper updates (nautilus 2.14.0-0ubuntu1). 'Text Editor' does appear in the 'Open with Other Application...' list for me.

Do you still have this issue with the latest updates? If so, is Text Editor present in the Applications Menu?

Thanks again

Upgraded to all packages available as of 15 minutes ago. Still a problem for me (with nautilus 2.14.0-0ubuntu1 and gedit 2.14.0-0ubuntu1)

I've logged in and out, and even restarted, but still no luck.

It's not listed in the Applications menu either (it should be in Accessories right?)

Yep, should be in Accessories.

Could you run the alacarte menu editor (in Accessories) and see if Text Editor is listed there, please? If so, is its entry ticked or unticked?

Thanks

Nope, not listed. I tried clicking the Revert button in alacarte too, but no change.

Could you run the following command in a terminal, please?

locate gedit.desktop > ~/gedit_dbg.txt

Then please attach the file gedit_dbg.txt from your home directory. Also, you may like to try reinstalling the gedit package.

Thanks

locate found 3 files:

/usr/share/app-install/desktop/gedit.desktop
/usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop
/home/john/.local/share/applications/gedit.desktop

When I removed the one in .local it immediately appeared back in the menu and the "open with" dialog (fixing my problem).

The one in .local had the following contents:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=gedit
MimeType=application/x-extension-nfo;
Exec=gedit
Type=Application
Terminal=false
NoDisplay=true

This file was last modified 2005-01-06 but the "Text Editor" entries did not disappear until a recent upgrade of something.
