Bug Description

Edubuntu 11.10 64bit. Intel Corporation WIFI Link 5100 on a 64bit Sony VAIO

Wireless works flawlessly with LiveCD. Post install, however, wireless doesn't work.

During install, I checked off the option to install the wireless network.

Symptoms (after installed reboot):

1.) No wireless networks are shown as being available.
2.) The wireless network which had been installed does not work.
3.) If one disables wireless networking, it cannot be re-enabled without restarting.

Removed installation and installed Xubuntu 11.10. Wireless works flawlessly after installation. The problems 'seems' to be Unity/Gnome related?

Just noticed that this bug might be identical to Bug #842007. I'll make a comment there.

Found a workaround. It's not the least bit elegant but it works.

Install Xubuntu.

Then:

sudo apt-get install unity

Then:

Install the Edubuntu Desktop from the Software Manager.

Once that's done, everything works as advertised. There are probably other ways besides installing Xubuntu. That's just the route I took.

For problem #3, does "sudo rfkill unblock all" work?

Sounds as if the main problem was that you were missing some needed package.

affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) → edubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

Just noticed your comment. This has been a while ago.

I've noticed a couple other users describe this (or a similar) problem on the Ubuntu Forums.

Here for example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2009372

I found another solution that may be a clue as to what was going on: I found that if I re-installed Edubuntu (while connected via wireless) but made sure *not* to check off the install wireless configuration, I had no trouble with the connection once Edubuntu was installed. Again, this has been a while and was with 11.10.

You might be able to reproduce the error by instructing the installer to install the wireless configuration?
