Bug Description

Binary package hint: eclipse

Hello,

so far, so good: Great work with the Hardy-Release. But: There is still Eclipse 3.2 in the repositorys. It has to be upgraded as fast as possilbe. If Ubuntu should be an operating system, which is the choice for using it professional, there can not be an out-of-date package of a so important application. It seems that Intrepid will still contain this old version, too. That would be a disaster!

So is it so difficould to build new Eclipse packages? And, of course, I am not the first one claiming that old version!

Greetings,
DeeDee0815

(Excuse my possibly bad english, please!)

I concur with DeeDee0815, eclipse is outdated! Eclipse 3.4.1 is already out. Can somebody take care of this problem?

I agree.
The problem with Java programs is that they are to easily installable/removable from your computer by simple end-users; so unfortunately, packagers prefer to spend time on software that are more complicated to install...

@Arnaud Blouin:

Hi Arnaud Blouin,

but these packagers should ask theirself for the sense of packages. Is it only to make complicated software easily to install, or ist it for installing every application. I think the last thing is the sense of a package managing system. Otherwise we could do the same thing as on windows machienes, just put the apps on the system, and never get rid of them. But this would, of course, make shared libraries impossible.

Eclipse is a big package and is complicated to maintain. For example there are 48 patches in the source package. Some of them does not apply on the current eclipse version. So they need a review.
