JVM terminates with exit code 13 on eclipse start

Fresh xubuntu 14.04 install + fresh eclipse install. Running eclipse from terminal produces the following output:

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning: You have loaded library /home/corphicks/opt/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_1.1.200.v20140116-2212/eclipse_1508.so which might have disabled stack guard. The VM will try to fix the stack guard now.

Also, this might be two separate bugs:

1. The JVM warning about the disabled stack guard.

2. The "JVM terminated. Exit code=13" error, which seems to be the more important piece.
