The man page for mkfs.ext4 only refers to ext2 and ext3 file systems
This from the man page: man mkfs.ext4
NAME
       mke2fs - create an ext2/ext3 filesystem
Should this be updated for ext4 file systems?

Thanks for reporting this documentation bug. I've checked in a fix for the man pages of mke2fs (and e2fsck, and dumpe2fs, and resize2fs, and debugfs, et. al.), and it will be fixed in e2fsprogs 1.41.6.
