Bug Description

Binary package hint: dvgrab

$ dvgrab -a tape-
Error: no camera exists

Solved by doing:
$ sudo chmod -v a+rw /dev/*1394

$ dvgrab -a tape-
Error: no camera exists

while the camcorder is well connected.
This issue is not new, had the same with Kubuntu 9.10. The same hardware (PC and camcorder) was working fine in previous version of Kubuntu (I don't remember which one exactly, but it used to work).

Thanks for your help.

They say that the issue comes from the driver, not from dvgrab.

I was going to file a bug against dvgrab's rather poor error message ("no camera exists", when it really should be "permission denied"). I'm not sure if this bug is already doing that, the description seems very unclear. Do you still get "no camera exists", even after making sure you have rw perms on /dev/raw1394?

Well, libdc
1394 is not linux1394... Raw1394 file permission is udev's rules job. You
can file the bug anyway, and I'll handle it from there.

Thanks,
Peter

Hi,

Sorry for not having answer earlier. I didn't yet find the time to double
check, but if I remember correctly, the bug happens after having given rw
permissions on /dev/raw1394.

Thanks,
Yaakov

I'd guess this is outdated in latest releases as new firewire drivers have replaced dv1394 and raw1394 - however with 11.10 I wasn't able to make firewire run so I marked as being affected by this bug.
