There is a regression in Oneiric where duplicity prompts for a gpg encryption/signing passphrase even when $PASSPHRASE has been set. This breaks my unattended backup script and apparently some other people as well: see https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/duplicity-talk/2011-08/msg00036.html
This is apparently now fixed upstream but Ubuntu needs to either cherrypick this fix or bring in a new duplicity release/snapshot. |

There is a workaround though, which is to set SIGN_PASSPHRASE. |
