Cannot substitute MariaDB for Mysql because of dependencies in drupal7

I want to use MariaDB as a substutute for Mysql in Drupal 7, as drupal does indeed support, but the package dependencies here demand mysql. Could the parallel packages from MariaDB be set as acceptable alternatives?

The MariaDB packages are available via:

MariaDB is not at the moment included in either Ubuntu nor Debian. That should happen first, then all packages (e.g. Drupal) should start referencing as their dependency MySQL or MariaDB (e.g. in Debian/control: Depends: mysql-client | mariadb-client).
