It appears that the failure is due to not connecting to MySQL. What was your procedure for installing: 1) install the Ubuntu LAMP stack first and then Drupal6 on top of that, or 2) install Drupal6 with everything installed at once?

Why does this thing ask me for a password when installing it when I haven't even inasmuch as set up a MySQL root password to begin with? This is NONSENSE!!!!!

Are you receiving the same error message as the OP during installation? If so, please provide some more information about the errors you are receiving, since you haven't provided enough information in your comment to diagnose your problem. If not, you appear to have found a different bug, so please feel free to post a new bug report against Drupal6.

Drupal requires a password to communicate with its own account in MySQL, and it will require the MySQL root password you set when you installed MySQL. If you set the MySQL root password to "Enter" then that is the password you should use.

For further information about installing Drupal6 on Ubuntu or Debian, please read /usr/share/doc/drupal6/README.Debian.gz. Also be sure to read http://drupal.org/getting-started/install for general Drupal installation instructions.
