When you say `will not allow me', what do you mean exactly ?

What does
  dpkg -i avg.deb
(or whatever the .deb is called) do ?

Ian.

An attempt to install AVG 7.5 for Linux caused dpkg to crash halfway through installation. I could not uninstall without reinstalling, which I was unable to do because of the previous application crash.

The .deb file was the package file used to install AVG, a semi-popular anti-malware application.

The file seems to be up for download here: ftp://ftp.grisoft.cz/pub/softw/70free/setup/avg75fld-r47-a1022.i386.deb

With this file, I was unable to reproduce this bug. Please try downloading the above file, and extracting it with dpkg, like so:

mkdir tmp
dpkg -x avg75fld-r47-a1022.i386.deb tmp

Does that work?

I think that's actually the package I used. I'm not too sure, but the dpkg bug was actually caused by the gdebi package manager when the app crashed halfway through installation of this package. Future attempts at installation did succeed.
