E: Build failure (dpkg-buildpackage died)
This is not technically a Java 7 FTBFS - due to a circular dependency the Maven install phase fails as the artifacts are installed already and are R/O.
This can be resolved by purging the relevant artifacts from the repository before the build starts - they are actually symbolic links so can be RM'ed.
