"dosemu -s" crashes system

Bug Description

Binary package hint: dosemu

On Ubuntu 10.04 and also 10.10 (beta) entering “dosemu -s” on the console crashes the entire system. The “-s” causes dosemu to run in superuser mode and thus gives you access to running graphical DOS applications like DOSSHELL and print-preview mode in WordPerfect 5.1.

The text on the console turns blue briefly but not long enough to see what it says. Then the screen goes blank. None of the usual key combinations (Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Alt+F7, etc) seem to have any effect. The system is unresponsive. Only solution seems to be a hard shutdown (power off) and restart.

Daren.

PS: this worked on Ubuntu 9.10

DO you try with the stable version of dosemu 1.4.0 +svn.1828-2 in the
distribution debian.
I have try with this version on ubuntu 10.04 (32B and64B) and I haven't
found a bug.

Hi lemonnier,

I am using version "1.4.0+svn.1999-2" that appears in the Ubuntu repositories. I do not have any other (3rd party) repositories setup.

Also I think this might have something to do with the resolution on my console (tty1 - tty6). Under Ubuntu 9.10 the resolution on my console was standard VGA (80x25). This worked great with DOSEMU and I was able to run in superuser mode with the -s option and have full graphics. I could even run Windows 3.1.

However sines upgrading to 10.04 and now also with 10.10 (beta) the console seems to be running in framebuffer mode and the resolution on my console is much higher making the text much smaller. Maybe DOSEMU does not “like” this? It runs alright without the -s option but the application is only displayed in the upper left corner of the screen and I have no graphics (no print preview in WP51).

Running WP51 is my primary reason for needing DOSEMU.

OK
There is a bug with the version 1.4.0+svn 1999

I am using dosemu for my professional activity and I can understand you
like so much dos.
Dos is really fantastic and there is so many interesting soft often
free.
I have used arachne (a browser running under dos) without any problem
during 6 or 7 years.

Now I like so much linux (ubuntu or puppy linux.......

With dosemu I have the same problem that you.

For the moment you can try to install the stable version of dosemu
(debian).

You will have to create the file 90-dosemu.conf.
And perhaps you could use Wordperfect.
Sincerely
Patrice Lemonnier

Hi Patrice Lemonnier,

I will try the stable (debian) version of DOSEMU. However shouldn't the fact that the version in the Ubuntu repositories doesn't work properly on 10.10 (beta) be noted as a bug so that possibly it can be fixed prior to releasing 10.10?

That was my main goal with mentioning it here. Perhaps it will be flagged as a bug and someone will fix the issue. I think that the packages in the repositories should work “out of the box” so to speak.

Regards,
Daren

I don't understand that Debian provides version of dosemu_1.4.0
+svn.1999-2_i386.deb in stable packages.
So many people have found a bug with the programs written in PASCAL

I have tried this version on dosemu with different dconfigarations of
ubuntu and it never works in Turbo Pascal

Can you tell me where does the bug come and in any case dosemu_1.4.0
+svn.1999-2_i386.deb is not stable dosemu

Sincerely
Patrice Lemonnier

Programs developed for the real mode in turbo pascal work correctly.

But programs developed in 16-bit protected (DPMI) don't work.
