Bug Description

Launch Doom on dosbox on a termina, wait to the title screen, get this crash in the terminal output:

Exit to error: DRC64:Unhandled memory reference

The problem seems to be worked on and fixed in the SVN version of dosbox, but it's been 6 years since v0.74 and there's no clue on when they'll be releasing the next stable release. Ubuntu/debian should think to base their packages on a svn snapshot instead.

There's not any newer stable release, and hasn't been for 6 years. The PPA shown above packages an SVN snapshot for ubuntu and I've been using it for a while without any problems. It fixes the DooM crash too.
In my opinion it would be better to get that PPA package included in the main repositories instead. There're too many changes and fixes on it, and little hope to see an official stable release soon.

Sorry for the wait.
If it helps, I've just rebuilt the dosbox in the PPA to the last svn release and made it available for both zesty and the current development release (artful).
Tested with DooM in artful and it works correctly

Still problem in 17.10 Artful with games like "Worms Plus", "Quake 1 shareware"

Workaround is described here:
Changing the value in the ~/.dosbox/dosbox-0.74.conf from core=auto to core=simple

Changing the value for core to "simple" is not a workaround because it renders the performance non-functional.

It got fixed in Debian in version 0.74-4-3, which means that this package has been broken in Ubuntu for a year and a half, or three consecutive releases.

It first made its appearance in Bionic which is as of yet unreleased, but the Bionic version immediately fixes the performance issues (and otherwise crashes) and is installable without any extra dependencies on Yakkety, Zesty and Artful.

You can download it here:
