Bug Description

Binary package hint: dolphin

Hi Kubuntu developers,

I tried dolphin in the Gutsy Gibbon Tribe3. I'm a konqueror fan however I have to say dolphin is a very nice file manager. There is one thing what I miss a lot: konqueror like servicemenu support.

I found the following comment on the official dolphin site:

"Support of service menus from Konqueror. To use the service menus they must be copied
from their current location (e.g. /opt/kde3/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/)
to the service menus folder used by Dolphin (e.g. /opt/kde3/share/apps/dolphin/servicemenus).
As most Linux distributions overloaded the service menu folder from Konqueror
by a huge number of service menus, it has been decided not to use the Konqueror
service menus directly."

So I copied all of the files from /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/ to /usr/share/apps/dolphin/servicemenus/ directory. Now I have all of the servicemenu features in dolphin too.

Could you provide a solution which do the same when I install kubuntu. I would like to see the konqueror servicemenus out of the box on Gusty Gibbon.

Dolphin is meant to be a simpler application than Konqueror. I think making them identical in this way defeats the purpose.

I don't think konqueror service menus works out of the box in dolphin means increased dolphin complexity.

I posted this bug on bugs.kde.org ( http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160319 ) and received a response that it's a case of distributions doing a correct installation of service-menus. From the response I got this certainly isn't 'intended behaviour' from the KDE point of view. Should this not be marked as 'bug'?

Little addition: Now that we're moving to KDE4 (where Konqueror uses Dolphin for file management) the option of using Konqueror to access these features will no longer exist. I'm using KDE4 now and there is now way to access any service menu: you have to open the app to accomplish anything. Not good!

For a quick solution, use http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/KDE4-servicemenus?content=80131 . Works fine for me on 8.04 and KDE4

Well, now Dolphin and Konq use the same service menus. We can close this bug now.
If you'd like to see new/replacement service menus, please file reports separately for them. (There is already one for file extraction.)
