Bug Description

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Yesterday after updates I closed down & restarted. I have both ubuntu-desktop as well as xubuntu-desktop. On xubuntu-desktop I have 2 panels, one at the bottom & one at the top. As I entered xubuntu-desktop I tried to change the resolution using displayconfig-gtk & this error came up.

shirish@Mugglewille:~$ sudo displayconfig-gtk
[sudo] password for shirish:

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'displayconfig-gtk' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 13 error_code 2 request_code 155 minor_code 2)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...
Aborted (core dumped)

I'll be attaching both the displayconfig-gtk -w pcitable.txt as well as xorg.conf files. Please lemme know if anything more is needed.

Could you please describe the steps before the crash. Did it crash on start or after doing some thing specific. Can you reproduce the bug?

Thanks

While the crash doesn't happen this time around, I did another round of updates but I am not at all successful in changing resolutions :(

I had a talk with Bryce Harrington and hence did the strace . Maybe that's also helpful.

So far displayconfig-gtk has only really been tested for ubuntu, not xubuntu, so marking this bug as a wishlist item as there may need to be porting development work to get it running on xubuntu.

Looking at the strace log, the crash occurs right after a series of calls to load pixmap icon stuff. So a guess would be that it's missing some icons. A next step would be to trace through the code either manually (by adding print statements around to narrow down the line causing the failure) or via gdb to see exactly which line is causing the fail.

There needs to be -dbgsym file of the displayconfig-gtk for gdb to work. I am subscribed to Martin Pitt's repository for -dbgsym files but haven't come across displayconfig-gtk-dbgsym as of yet. The other thing is of course the kernel needs to be fixed before that can be done. bug 74691 till its there, debugging is not possible.
As far as manual debugging is concerned, if you can tell me/guide me either through the list as to where what printf or whatever statements have to be done will do them & tell you the results. Either on IRC or here on launchpad. The only requirement, precise instructions, also please note that I've no programming background/understanding so don't assume anything.

Btw thanx for a great tool & hope to work with this ;)

As a workaround in xubuntu-desktop I used xrandr -s 1280x1024@60 to do the job but this is not the ideal thing for a user to do.

Shirish, any progress on this?

Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.
