Bug Description

Binary package hint: disk-manager

disk-manager has one of the most duplicated Ubuntu crash reports, bug 255658 (with 66 duplicates), which has been open for 6 months with no action taken. According to the bug comments the developer was contacted and there has been no response. Additionally, the bug has been opened upstream in Launchpad. Furthermore, looking at https://code.edge.launchpad.net/disk-manager/ the code was last modified nearly 2 years ago. Due to the buggyness of the software and lack of response I propose removing it from the archive.

There is an alternative : http://pysdm.sourceforge.net/ , but it does not manage UUID

Concerning disk-manager, a French contributor has created a DEB package for Lucid (http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=3554670#p3554670 , DEB here : http://www.mediafire.com/?5y3ol3mzjn2), and points out that disk-manager is still in Debian's repositories. (http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=names&suite=all&section=all&keywords=disk-manager), and that even if buggy, it is still better than manually editing Fstab.

another user confirms he never had problem (except crash) with Disk-manager, while Pysdm produced problems on several machines.

yeah pydsm caused problems for me. i wouldn't recommend it.

YannUbuntu (yannubuntu) wrote :

According to several French users, Pydsm is more dangerous than the bug of Disk-manager (bug #255658), the only risk with Disk-manager is to format a disk before unmounting it and save the changes via Disk-manager. But this can be repaired.

There is a Debian maintainer for Disk-manager : David Paleino

FYI, here is the procedure to build the Disk-manager DEB for Lucid :

1) Download Disk-managerform Debian repositories
2) dpkg-deb -x disk-manager_1.0.1-4_all.deb disk-manager_1.0.1-5_all.deb
3) dpkg-deb -e disk-manager_1.0.1-4_all.deb disk-manager_1.0.1-5_all.deb/DEBIAN
4) Modify the dependancy list in control (python2.5 -> python2.6, add python-notify & hal) and in the program (python2.5 -> python2.6)
5) Then reconstruct the package : dpkg-deb -b disk-manager_1.0.1-5_all.deb disk-manager_1.0.1-6_all.deb

Anyone interested in maintaining a PPA for Disk-manager ?

A bug report is far from the appropriate place to discuss the re-including a removed package from Ubuntu. Your comments would be more appropriate (and read by more people) on the ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list.

no it' s the place
you decide here to remove this package, why?
because
1- bug 255658 (with 66 duplicates) and if you'll have open the attachements:
surprise that was python scratches
2- the code was last modified nearly 2 years ago:
why not if the code is ok!
3- there is a debian maintener: David Paleino

and now the bugs:

- dont know why after a reboot
- Happenes everytime i restart
- I've just started my Kubuntu Intrtepid Alpha 5,After I logged in,then Apport-Qt had reported that Disk-Manager had crashed on me,so here is my bug report.

- don't know i opened synaptic manager but had not installed anything when the crash graphic appeared.
- This error occurs on start-up with Intrepid Ibex (ubuntu 8:10).
- this crash appears then i haven't start the program
- error Presented after selecting timezone and keyboard
Bug #286990 je n'y comprends rien

- Removed .gconf* and .gnome* from account to try and resolve issue with gnome-session-save not saving startup of gnome-terminal and other apps. Had crash while configuring appearance, so should be completely unrelated.
Bug #314994 disk-manager crashed with IOError in copyfile() while trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 from .iso image -- created by remastersys application. Seems to have installed ubuntu from image anywayCrashed while partitioning for image install. Not finished accessing this end. It appears to have installed anyways.
