Huh? That's really curious.

Could you please follow up with the output of "dpkg -s xemacs21" and "apt-cache policy xemacs21"?

Unless you specifically require xemacs21, you might be able to work around the problem by completely removing it from your system. If you want Emacs, you may be better off with emacs23 (or emacs24 if it's available by the time you read this) which is GNU Emacs. Unfortunately, Xemacs appears to be by and large unmaintained at this point.

This happened to me, even though I did not have/want emacs on my system.

Fixed with:

sudo apt-get purge emacs*

Mickey's fix solve this for me too - when I later installed emacs23 update-alternatives cleaned out severel old references to xemacs21. Note however that some files are left behind in /usr/share/xemacs21/ - the seem harmless, though.

I actually had a pretty freshly installed Ubuntu. I also had separate
partitions for home, /usr/local etc so I finally just made a fresh install
and it's been working fine ever since.

I believe it was an interrupted update of some sort that broke my deb-db.

Thanks for taking the.time. Sorry I can't be of any help our shared problem.

Cheers
Mats
