dhcp3-client does not send hostname

Bug Description

Just noticed my fresh install of hardy is not sending it's hostname to the dhcpd3 server (and thus no entry is being added to a dynamic bind dns).
All worked as expected when I added "send host-name "<hostname>"; back into the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
Alternatively I could have used the dhclient.conf.dpkg-dist which is the conf that appears in fiesty.

I did see bug 10239 which reports the same problem with the same resolution but as it is fixed there?

#uname -a
Linux build 2.6.24-16-server #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:15:38 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Same problem for me. I've got a Desktop and a Notebook installed with Hardy, both showing the described problem. Editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf ("<hostname>") doesn't make any difference. My setup differs a little bit from the above: I'm running Hardy with the 2.6.24-16-generic kernel. My router is a Fritzbox 7050, which is very common in Germany. If you need more information, let me know.

I had the same problem. Installing Samba fixed it.

Same problem, but installing Samba didn't change anything. Editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf didn't make any difference either (in my case the default line of send host-name "<hostname>"; was present, if I changed it to send the actual host name that didn't make any difference).

Check /etc/nsswitch.conf - look for the line starting hosts:

If it doesn't include the value wins, add it. The line on my machine is

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 wins

Then restart networking or reboot.
