Bug Description

In testing Gutsy Tribe CD5, dmraid (installed through synaptic) will recognize an array, but not the partitions on it.

When I use the Feisty Release DVD, everything works properly.

-It seemed necessary to update this bug description to reduce confusion.

I am MISSING the following debug lines that I USED TO get with Feisty
when I try to activate my RAID array:

I used to get the above debug lines when activating the array on
Feisty. Otherwise, everything is exactly the same as the output from
Feisty:

My mistake. This isn't a problem with libdevmapper. It is a problem with dmraid, in Gutsy only. (Feisty works fine)

You need to install the gutsy version of dmraid on gutsy. Please use apt-get to install from the repository, rather than manually trying to install the feisty package.

ya, I figured that out and got past that. Heh... maybe i need to close this bug and start a new one to get that across? :) So then when I install as you suggest:

"If I try to install the latest dmraid package from the repository on Tribe5, it installs ok, but won't recognize my RAID array. The exact same RAID array recognizes without a problem from the Feisty Live DVD, (+dmraid installed)"

dmraid will also work if there is no swap partition on the drive. But... I need a swap partition for a linux install.

Please post the exact output of dmraid -tay -vvvv under gutsy.

Looks like it recognizes it just fine to me. Try again without the t flag and and you should have something in /dev/mapper/

Nope, the partitions don't show up in /dev/mapper/

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls -lrt /dev/mapper

My, that is strange... you sure you gave it -ay that time? No -t? Try adding -d.

The odd thing is that there it says it recognized the raid array, but it doesn't look like it tried to activate it for some reason. When you posted the output last time from -tay, it said it activated it ( or would have if you hadn't told it to just test ).

is there something else I can do to figure out this problem?

I am stumped... everything looks fine except for the fact that it just doesn't try to activate the set. Try changing to -dddd for maximum debug output. Also do a dmraid -n.

I have a similar problem with a VIA software Raid setup (using hardy).
I have attached the output of the different dmraid commands that are asked before.

I noticed that dmraid creates the /dev/mapper/via_bfdbdagceh.dm-tmp file and renames it, but later it deletes it again. I don't know why.
If there is anything I can test, please let me know.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?

I have installed dmraid-1.0.0.rc14-2ubuntu12 (and libdmraid1.0.0.rc14-2ubuntu12) on my system and after installing it has created the /dev/mapper directory with the right devices for my raid system.

So I think the issue is solved.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I installed it on a live CD of Ubuntu 8.10
