Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

I'm not sure wether this is the right package, but I hope somebody will point me to the right direction if it is not.
When I connect my portable music player (a cmx stingray 888) to the USB port on the front panel of my pc, it works without any problem. When I connect it to my keyboard which has an USB hub included, nothing happens. So I looked into my syslog and found the following lines:

Mar 18 09:24:11 weintraube kernel: [ 215.220320] usb 2-2.2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7
Mar 18 09:24:11 weintraube kernel: [ 215.322158] usb 2-2.2: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub
Mar 18 09:24:11 weintraube kernel: [ 215.344246] usb 2-2.2: rejected 1 configuration due to insufficient available bus power
Mar 18 09:24:11 weintraube kernel: [ 215.344252] usb 2-2.2: no configuration chosen from 1 choice

I think there should be a notification in this case, because a user new to ubuntu would expect the device to do something but instead gets no visible action. The message could be something like "the usb connector where you attached your device does not have enough power, try connecting on another one" (of course not by word - my english is not that good).

I agree.

It just happened to me when i was connecting my iPod to the USB port on the keyboard. I'm running Edgy on an iMac and i was just not getting any error whatsoever leaving me clueless about the problem.

Cheers!

Just for the record, if I boot up the Mac partition and connect the same iPod to the same USB connector, it works as expected. Is Apple cheating somehow? Are they "forcing" the connection?

Hope this helps.

Hi silwol,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 203473

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

What other information is needed to track this down. Being 100% reproducible we should be able to devise something.

This is now affecting me in Ubuntu 13.04, and is a serious show-stopper. Bus-powered USB 3.0 devices, that have worked without issue on many other computers, as well as this computer with different OSes, do not work in Ubuntu 13.04.

Attempting to use the device fails, as it appears to just stop responding. Looking at dmesg, I see:

rejected 1 configuration due to insufficient available bus power
no configuration chosen from 1 choice

I have attempted / checked / tried:

1) Double-checking settings in the BIOS. Everything looks good.
2) Monitoring the situation with 'powertop'. Unable to affect anything.
3) Looking at sysfs 'files'. Everything is as expected.
4) Looking at lspci and lsusb verbose output. Everything is as expected.

Someone sitting next to me has the exact same laptop & USB 3.0 host controller, and the device is working perfectly with Linux Mint. Current software install information:

     3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17 18:16:28 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Like I said, this is a fairly serious problem in terms of new devices. I am happy to be involved in debugging, as I would like to see this solved as quickly as possible.

Cheers,
Ben

I just re-proved that this is an issue. Booting onto a Linux Mint LiveUSB drive enables bus-power of the device over USB3. In Ubuntu 13.04, it refuses to cooperate.

Attempting to override the power configuration via the command line, as described here, has no effect:

Wolfgang Silbermayr, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
