Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Enable cube for workspaces. I don't see a cube when changing workspaces. Also the keyboard accelerators for changing the workspaces do not work

Are you sure that compix is running at the time?

If it isn't none of the effects (such as the cube) would work.

Cheers,

Matt

I can confirm part of that. Activating the cube plugin has no effect. However, the keyboard accelerators still work for me.

compiz is absolutely running: Windows are wobbly, changing workspaces uses a "fade" effect.

Same here.

I'm not sure that is the same bug to be honest.

Due to the fact that Jaap's keyboard accelerators don't work, and yours' (Seb and Emilio) do, the two things seem different, the developers would still need more info.

Cheers,

Matt

Aren't the effects and keyboard shortcuts controlled by settings in gconf? So it could be that for some reasons we do not have the correct settings over there. How can I go back to the default settings?

Just installed the package compiz-settings (a pity that that is not in the ubuntu repos) and saw that actually the right accelerators are set, but they just don't do anything

Jaap: which version of Ubuntu are you running? I think you aren't running feisty, as Seb and me.

In feisty, you just need compiz-core, compiz-plugins and compiz-gnome (or kde), but not compiz-settings.

If you are running other Ubuntu version, could you tell us which one, and the compiz version? Have you installed them from the repos, or from where?

Regards
Pochu

I'm running feisty and have all the packages you refer to installed. compiz-settings (see [1] )is just a capplet so you don't have to muck around with gconf settings

Jaap:

But do you have them installed from the ubuntu repos or from the freedesktop ones?

Sometimes, the "keyboard accelerators not working" problem happens to me as well. Not often, though. No idea what triggers it.

I am using feisty (amd64, NVidia 7600GS), the cube does not work for me too. Compiz is running smoothly (no problem for wobbling windows, fading, etc etc) but no cube at all, neither with keyboard shortcuts, mouse dragging, nor desktop swticher in the panel.
Sometimes trying to change the setting of the cube in desktop-effects crashes compiz.

I've this problem too... installed gnome-compiz-manager from Gandalfn repository and now I can enable the cube plugin.

I also like GianFranco installed gnome-compiz-manager and now it works also fine.

What I noticed that in gnome-compiz-manager the number of desktop was only set to one. Other thing I notice again that as before when I had installed beryl the desktop switcher looks a bit weird again it's completely light gray and there is no visible line between the different desktops

I have confirmed this bug both on my machine and a freshly installed Feisty Daily.

Compiz works just fine -- it's absolutely running, but changing workspaces does a fade effect -- no cube.

The keyboard cube shortcuts do not activate the cube in any way.

IFAIK compiz can manage workspaces (like metacity) and viewport. If the pager show only a gray rectangle, viewports are enabled (and you should have the cube) but in this case you can't do things like move windows between viewports.

If you want a cube change the following settins in gconf-editor to:

/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize: 4

and

/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops: 1

Then you have a cube.

But for me as a nvidia-user, compiz of feisty herd 5 works absolutely bad. Slow, unstable.. simply bad. :-( I cannot use it at the moment.
Beryl from the beryl-feisty-repos works flawlessly though... strange.

I can confirm that changing those gconf settings gets the cube working. Those values should probably be the default.

Thanks for the workaround. It could be great if compiz-manager could be added too and for both AMD64 and x86 version ;)
