This happened to me too.

I was using democracy player 0.95 which was announced about 20 minutes ago with an ubuntu link. I follwed the instructions, sudo apt-get upgrade, it installed no hassles, then crashed on start up.

It's using python 2.4 (hence different from the other bug reports).
