Bug Description

I'm testing the Lubuntu oneiric alternate CD 20110827-i386 and I've run through the process twice to be certain this could be reproduced. Upon completing the installation the installed size per gparted is only 952.79 MB, and trying to boot simply fails.

If I boot into recovery mode via grub and select the netroot option running apt-get -f install shows nothing but running apt-get install lubuntu-desktop installs the full meal deal similar to what's seen after performing a cli/minimal install. I'll attach the apt logs if not included by apport-collect.

I think the apt history log pretty much tells the story.

Probably unrelated but something that has me a little bit stumped is that apport seems not to recognize (or accept) my password. When attempting to file this report I finally had to just click on cancel but to my surprise the report completed anyway.

But I got a couple of crash reports immediately upon the desktop booting (probably jockey related) and I was unable to send those reports. I swear it sort of acts like Debian - like it wants a root password rather than my user password. Does that make any sense?

Confirmed on both i386 and amd64, lubuntu-desktop is not installed during the process.

I saw that some packages are marked as not installable (see http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily/current/report.html), maybe it's related to this issue ?

I'm puzzled by the iso-testing tag. How can we be testing an official QA image when there is none here:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/result/6298/1155

If you click on the DL link no image is listed, just this:

Change in behavior with 20110830-i386 which may or may not be an official iso-testing image.

The installation fails and says so with the warning that "Installation step failed" and goes on to explain that the step that failed is "Select and install software".

After trying again, and failing again, I chose "finish the install" and after completion boot failed, so I tried recovery mode and ran apt-get -f install which showed nothing but running apt-get install lubuntu-desktop shows:

Depends: gnome-system-tools but it is not going to be installed, along with the following recommends not being installed; abiword, gnome-mplayer, gnome-time-admin, guvcview. Then it says, E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I hope this is helpful.

I'm subscribing Jean-Baptiste Lallement in hopes of finding out whether or not this is a true iso-testing image. Apologies in advance because I know that I've leaned on you a lot lately, and I know you're very, very busy.

Some change in behavior with "Lubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Beta i386 (20110830.1)". Note that is the actual info listed in /var/log/installer/media-info, just to be certain the md5sum is c3a95097164e7416dc25ba28e700557b.

Anyway I once again got the "Installation step failed" and explanation that the step that failed is "Select and install software". It failed again on repeat so I completed the installation and of course boot failed.

But this time from TTY, when I typed apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, I was asked to insert the installation media (20110830.1) so I did and then the installation appeared to complete. It booted successfully afterwards.

Once again I'll attach the apt/history.log. Not sure what might be helpful from the installer logs.

Could I have /var/log/installer/syslog, please?

I had to format that to do some other testing, I gritted my teeth when I did it, but that's not a problem.

I'll spin the disc up again right now and do a retest. It should only take about 30 to 40 minutes.

I badly need to invest in a couple more cheap refurbished drives ASAP ;^)

OK, what I've done; I completed the install, no boot afterwards as expected, gparted shows installed size of 836.45MB.

I have not yet booted into recovery mode to install lubuntu-desktop, instead I booted into a parallel install of Ubuntu Natty, then mounted that new install (labeled Alt Lubuntu) and opened var/log as admin (using nautilus-gksu). I then copied /var/log/installer/syslog to the desktop as a text file and I'm attaching it here. I hope this works.

I should be able to leave this installed unless we have a complete rebuild of the Lubuntu live image very soon. In fact, unless there are any major changes to ubiquity, I'd likely skip all but the live and manual partitioning steps at this point.

When I'm done here I'll boot into recovery mode and complete the install.

BTW I parsed the copy of that log after posting, and judging by the time stamps, it appears to be complete. I was surprised that I couldn't attach the log itself from a parallel install, I'll have to get schooled on that some time in the future ;^)

Sorry for the delay, just too many interruptions this AM.

This is going to need to be fixed in the Lubuntu seeds. I think the right answer is to remove the libavcodec* blacklist entry. Here's the relevant technical board meeting log:

  http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2007/01/02/%23ubuntu-meeting.html#t09:14

The distinction drawn in this meeting was predicated on CDs being physically-shipped objects, as distinct from objects downloaded over the Internet. In the case of the Lubuntu CDs where Canonical isn't shipping physical media, I can't see how there's a legal difference between what we ship in the archive and what we put on the Lubuntu CDs. Thus, I think the blacklist entry is pointless for Lubuntu, at least assuming that you intend to ship binaries linked against libavcodec.

I need to do some follow up here. With the Lubuntu Beta 1 alternate image I get a broken software sources UI. I've so far cross tested the Ubuntu alt iso and it's OK, but I need to try the latest Lubuntu daily build to try and reproduce this.

Please see the attached images. I'm under intense time constraints ATM but I will give this a closer look before Beta 2 ;^)

You'll hopefully be able to see that the "Settings" button in the the update manager is "grayed out", and opening Synaptic and choosing Settings > Repos displays a broken UI.

I'll try to follow up on this very soon.
