Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

About 4 months ago I purchased a dell gx520 (refurbished) with winxp installed. Started to
experiment with ubuntu linux 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). Linux was installed on an USB drive - making
progress learning.

About 2 months ago I decided to try a fresh install with ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). This is
where I ran into PROBLEMS:

1) there was no option as to where to install grub - this damaged the MBR and other key areas of
the disk containing xp.

2) Tried some microsoft suggested techniques to restore the damaged disk - made the problem
worse.

3) For what ever reason the internal sata controller failed at the same time - not sure if this
is a coincidence or the grub install some how damaged the controller.

4) A few days later the internal cd-rom drive stopped working - controller problem. Able to
connect cd to an usb adapter and access discs.

5) Tried to install ubuntu 8.10 from the usb cd drive - NOGO. The bios of the dell supports
booting from an internal cd or usb cd drive.

SUGGESTIONS:

A) The installer should either detect another os installed on a computer or ask some questions up
front. If the detection technique is used and another os is identified then the person installing
should be walked through all the details of where to install linux and grub ( or another boot
loader ).

B) If this is going to be a virgin install then let the process be as automated as desired.

Comments:
1) There are aspects of this fiasco outside the ubuntu community. I lost a significant amount of
time trying to recover while moving forward with other projects.

2) There needs to be thorough testing of the installer before making it available to the public.

Currently I don't have a system running Linux, so gathering some of the information suggested is not possible.

Mike
