9.04 install with RAID fails to debootstrap

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Trying to build a desktop which also serves as a back-up device I wish to build a config with a 140Gb disc containing swap, root and /home along with 2x500Gb discs serving as a RAID 1 device on which to run a Samba server.

All versions of the Alternate CD tried allow me to configure the drives and carry out partitioning OK.

Installing the system fails due to (repeated claims of) inability to debootstrap the packages, beginning with the AMD64 base - I think - forgive me, I've never reported a bug before!

I'm having the same issue. Looks like the best option is to forget about RAID. About to give open solaris a try can't imagine that doesn't support RAID.

I tried Debian - same installer, same problem.
I tried OpenSuse and that works a treat. So there I'll stay for now!

Drop me a message if I can help tho' I'm no sysadmin just a bloke
trying to build some back-up for home.

Actually gave it another (dozen) tries and got it working. Once I get VMWare setup I'll put together some sort of how to since everything available on the web is outdated, wrong, or over complicates something simple.

One question I do have is why partitioning takes place so late during the install process? After loading the installing & required libs it should be step 1. No sense getting dhcp and network connectivity if you don't or can't get the partitions right for the install.

Oh, well done! I tried every version I could get my hands on and then
gave up. What was the secret?

I'm guessing but suspect that partitioning taking place so late may be
due to the needs of net boot/install options - no network connection,
no progress...
