PS3 Alternate Installer: "failed to determine the codename for the release"

Bug Description

When installing ubuntu 8.10 on my PS3 with the alternate install disk it gives the following debootstrap error;

"failed to determine the codename for the release"

Ubuntu refuses to install any further after this error. Is there anything I can do to make my install succeed?
