Bug Description

== SRU Justification ==
The r8152 module is used in a thunderbolt-connected docking station and
ax88179_178a by an external USB dongle.

Despite having two nics connected the bug reporter can't install Bionic.

This SRU request is to add the modules to the debian installer.

== Fix ==
UBUNTU: [Config:] d-i: Add ax88179_178a and r8152 to nic-modules

== Regression Potential ==
Low. This is adding a module to the installer.

== Test Case ==
A test kernel was built with this patch and tested by the original bug reporter.
The bug reporter states the test kernel resolved the bug.

r8152 is used in a thunderbolt-connected docking station and ax88179_178a by an external USB dongle.

Despite having two nics connected i can't install Bionic. :-)

This is probably a subset of the modules to be included when fixing LP: #1503218.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1771823

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

I built a test kernel with those two modules built into the kernel. The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1771823

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note about installing test kernels:
• If the test kernel is prior to 4.15(Bionic) you need to install the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
• If the test kernel is 4.15(Bionic) or newer, you need to install the linux-modules, linux-modules-extra and linux-image-unsigned .deb packages.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, both devices worked with the kernel, I tested them by booting the kernel in qemu VM and redirecting the USB devices to the VM.

I'm wondering why not just adding the modules to the udebs, but I'm happy with this solution, too.

Thanks for testing. Yes, I'll add those modules to the udebs. I just wanted to have you test those modules before adding them into the udebs.

Next time you can just ask for that, i already tested them by manually loading them to the installer from a pendrive.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-bionic' to 'verification-done-bionic'. If the problem still exists, change the tag 'verification-needed-bionic' to 'verification-failed-bionic'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
