Just happened as I opened up firefox also I am using ubuntu 8.04

That's because debconf fails:

Setting up samba-common (3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.3) ...
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable
dpkg: error processing samba-common (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
