Bug Description

Some time ago a number of us replaced our digital cameras with new models, and as we work with raw images we quickly found that dcraw and ufraw did not support the new sensor dimensions. An email to Dave Coffin resulted in patches to dcraw.c within hours, but now some months later it seems that no update has been made in the repositories, and a quick look shows that ubuntu 12.04 has no plans to update dcraw and ufraw from version 8.99-1 and 0.18-1. What will it take to get these 2 very important programs brought up to date?

Both dcraw and ufraw need to be brought up to date with the developers source, which has been updated.

The Canon SX-30 and perhaps other models are now included in the 9.12 version of dcraw.c, and as ufraw is built using dcraw.c it too needs to be updated.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/913833/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

dcraw.c is changed by Dave Coffin frequently in order to support new cameras, and the version in ubuntu is quite out of date, and it appears ubuntu 12.04 is even staying with the out of date dcraw 8.99 version. ufraw which is compiled including dcraw.c is also affected and out of date, which is causing many of us who have purchased new cameras and work with raw images much concern.

Based upon the wiki and Dave Coffins web site, the latest stable version is 9.11, Oct 7, 2011 and provides support for the Canon SX30 IS and Canon EOS 600D which several of my friends and I had purchased a while back, and as dcraw is a tool used to accomplish work, we are quite anxious to see it updated so we can get back to work. The 8.99 build is quite old now, and it appears that even Ubuntu 12.04 plans to keep it. This is quite disconcerting for those of us who moved from MS Windows to a Linux OS in order to reduce the problems which prevented us from doing our work.

As this"BUG?" is not actually a BUG, but a work prevention problem due to an up-to-date application not being made available for use, might there be some way to have some attention focused on it?

Actually it's only dcraw that's out of date. UFRaw is at 0.18 which is current according to the ufraw web page [UFRaw includes dcraw in its source tree rather than relying on an external installation].

upstream version is 9.16 and supports more raw formats (among them, Samsung's SRW).
thank you if you can update, this will also make ufraw fork better at the same time.

in the mean time, one can install libraw-bin package which is more up to date than dcraw.
in this package, there is an implementation of the dcraw program which uses libraw4 instead.

We're looking for support on the Canon SX30 and like to work with ufraw. The latest dcraw supports the Canon SX30, but the latest version of ufraw available in synaptic is based on an older version of dcraw. Would installing libraw-bin, which synaptic shows to be version 0.14.4-0ubuntu2 change anything?
