texttops
As of CUPS 1.3, CUPS accepts only utf-8 as the character set, not only for IPP requests and
responses, but uses this encoding as well for any text processing. Thus, for printing text files
with legacy, non-UTF8 encodings, the user is forced to convert the text files to UTF8 e.g. by
using the iconv conversion utility.
To avoid this inconvenience, a wrapper script has been created which (at least) tries to do
this code conversion automatically, by default using the Perl package Encode::Guess.
Installation and configuration
This script is written in Perl. As it uses the layer concept introduced with PerlIO in 8.0, at least
this Perl version is required, but a higher version (8.1 or above) is highly recommended.
Prior to installing this script in the directory $CUPS_SERVERBIN/filter, the original
texttops filter must be renamed, the proposed new name is orig.texttops. The script
contains only 2 lines of configuration data:
$texttops = $ENV{CUPS_SERVERBIN} . ’/filter/orig.texttops’;
@suspects = qw(iso-8859-15 iso-8859-1);
which may be edited as needed (see below). The first of these lines denotes the „secondary“
filter to which the recoded UTF8 data are passed. The second line denotes a list of charset
names which are tried consecutively1.
Following is a list of all encodings supported by Encode::Guess2:

From opher, 12:35 Jan 28, 2008 (score=3)

In CUPS version 1.2.12 I can submit a print job with:
  lp -d MyPrinter -o document-format="text/plain;charset=iso-8859-8" an_iso-8859-8_file.text

and the scheduler will place CHARSET=iso-8858-8 in the environment when calling texttops. Is this behavior broken in CUPS 1.3.x?

Thanks, Opher. [ Reply ]
